Welcome to Compound Binocular Microscopes
This site is devoted to giving the reader an insight into different types of compound binocular microscopes. In general, these can range from high quallity research and medical grade binocular microscopes to low priced, cheap compound microscopes. Selecting the correct optical instrument certainly depends on the microscopy application. Most of our readers are interested in the student grade compound binocular microscopes. Lets review some of the features and options to look for when considering the purchase of a compound binocular microscope.
First, binocular means - two oculars-. So in a binocular compound microscope, there are two eyepieces that fit into two ocular openings in the microscope head. A slight variation would be to use a monocular compound microscope which has only one ocular and one eyepiece. Features to review may be the lighting capability. The cheaper microscopes do not have as good of light condensing system. They may completely lack a light condenser, and simply shine all the light to the bottom of the microscope slide. Some compound microscopes that are cheaply made may have a simple disc diaphragm on the bottom of the microscope stage to control the light. It has different aperature sizes for the light to pass. On a more costly binocular compound microscope, we have light condensers that may be on rack and pinion geared condenser holders. These are great, and allow the light source of the compound microscope to be well adjusted.
